A vida Portuguesa | Time Out Market Lisboa

A Vida Portuguesa

A store that’s more than a souvenir shop, selling authentic old Portuguese products.

If there is a shop that fits this market like a glove it is this one. Many of the items it sells are an extension of a traditional market – for example the shopping baskets – and bear a close relation to the shop’s culinary surroundings. Pans, sharp knives, fans, brooms, vintage Viarco pencils, Ach. Brito soaps and Bordalo Pinheiro swallows are among the archetypally Portuguese products that Catarina Portas has rescued from oblivion and put on sale in her shops. Their history stretches back generations and have great stories about Portuguese culture associated with them. That makes them great presents for foreign visitors to take away, but also for locals to be reminded of the good things that were and are produced in this country.

Time Out says “For those who pay close attention to decorative detail, we can confirm what you probably suspect: the furniture here was bought from old retail establishments. The counter came from an old perfumery and the tables from a bookshop in the Bairro Alto.”
