If there was one thing missing this summer at the newly opened Time Out Market Porto, it was an ice cream shop. Problem solved. We brought in one of the best to a pop-up space in the market’s outdoor square.
Nivà was the first “Cremeria” to open in Portugal. Born in Turin in 1988, through the hands of Diana de Benedetti and her husband Silvio Rivolta, Nivà arrived in Portugal in 2018. What sets Nivà apart from a regular ice cream shop is the consistency of their ice creams—creamier, almost like a frozen mousse. It’s the “authentic artisanal gelato” directly from Italy, made with the best, 100% natural, and high-quality ingredients like Alpine pasture milk, Piedmont hazelnuts, or seasonal fruit.
Some of the most iconic recipes from this Italian gelateria are crafted by renowned chefs, including some who are Michelin-starred. This includes a collaboration with chef Vasco Coelho Santos (Euskalduna Studio), also present at the Time Out Market, featuring the flavor of one of his most iconic desserts, the rabanada.
Served in a cup or cone, some of the flavors available at this new spot include passion fruit, strawberry, açaí, extra dark chocolate, cremino, pistachio, dulce de leche, vanilla, stracciatella, yogurt, and coconut.
Fridays and Saturdays in July and August will feature DJ sets to energize the square at Time Out Market Porto. From 7:00 PM to midnight, the DJ booth, located in the tower overlooking the square, will host several well-known names from the city.
July: DJ Igor (July 20)/ Francisco Coelho (July 27)
August:
Fridays: João Vieira, DJ, musician, and producer, also known as DJ Kitten. Starting from Porto, he redefined the clubbing scene in Portugal during the 2000s with the innovative Club Kitten. Catch him in the tower’s DJ booth every Friday in August.
Saturdays: Groovelicious (August 3)/ Aquele Carvalho (August 10)/ Let Vinyl Play (August 17)/ IARA (August 24)/ Phephz (August 31)
Let’s dance!
If you’re reading this, it’s because you’ve made it to summer, the most desirable time of the year. To celebrate, we have six cocktails to toast the season at Time Out Market Porto. Take a look at our suggestions for the hottest days.
“O Verdadeiro” from Time Out Bar
The signature cocktail of Time Out Bar Porto was named after Time Out Market Porto’s launch campaign – ‘Os Verdadeiros’ (The Real Ones) – which was voiced by the city’s rap queen Capicua. It was the first cocktail to make it onto the bar’s list. Some might doubt how real it is, going by its green colour, but after the first sip no one can doubt that this is a cocktail from Porto. It contains vinho verde, Dalva Dry White Reserve port wine, aguardente bagaceira (grape marc spirit), bergamot liqueur, orange liqueur, grape and basil cordial, ginger syrup and lemon juice. €9.50€
Sangria à moda do Porto from Time Out Bar
Created in time for São João – the city’s big annual party, held on 24 June, the eve of St John’s Day – this drink has been kept on at the Time Out Bar for the rest of the summer. It is called sangria à moda do Porto, but it does not come in a jug as sangria usually does but is rather a wine cocktail devised by the team at Time Out Bar Porto. It is made with red wine, tawny port, aguardente bagaceira (grape marc spirit), raspberry syrup, lime juice and orange, garnished with mint and smoked cinnamon. Price: €7
Aperol Spritz (kiosk)
It is not exactly new. Orange fever has been everywhere since 1919, when the Barbieri brothers created this bright-orange drink made from bitter orange, rhubarb, herbs and various roots. It began as an aperitif and became known as the perfect drink for social occasions, but quickly spread to all hours of the day. This summer, orange fever has spread to the outdoor square of Time Out Market Porto, where a temporary kiosk has been erected. Order an Aperol mixed with a good prosecco, sparkling water and a wedge of orange and pair it with one of the many dishes from the Market’s chefs and restaurants. Price: €8
Porto Tónico from Sala de Prova
White port and tonic is a drink that can be found all over the city. But sipping a porto tónico while seated at the top of the iron and glass tower designed by local star architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, enjoying views of the iconic Torre dos Clérigos church tower and the rest of Porto, is an experience that is definitely on the must-do city checklist. Take the lift up to the Tasting Room and check it out. €11 11€
